Selective Service

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

Selective Service is a system by which men ages 18 through 25 register with the U.S. government for military service. These men do not automatically become members of the Armed Forces, but in a national crisis requiring a draft, these men may be randomly called up to serve.

Male resident aliens must register if they immigrate to the U.S. before their 26th birthday. Temporary visa holders such as students and visitors do not need to register with Selective Service.
