Joint Sponsor

By Jennifer McFadyen, About.com

Definition:

If you do not meet the income requirement to sponsor a family member for immigration, you may ask a joint sponsor to sign the affidavit of support.

A joint sponsor is a person who assumes legal responsibility for financially supporting an immigrant until that immigrant becomes a U.S. citizen or completes 40 quarters of work.

A joint sponsor assumes this responsibility by signing Form I-864 Affidavit of Support. The joint sponsor must meet the 125% income requirement alone. You cannot combine your income with that of a joint sponsor to meet the income requirement.
