Affidavit of Support

By , About.com Guide

Definition:

When you bring a relative to live in the U.S. permanently, you must show that you are able to financially support your relative until that person becomes a U.S. citizen or completes 40 quarters of work in the U.S. You assume this legal responsibility by signing an affidavit of support.

You will be asked to prove that your household income is equal to or higher than 125% of the U.S. poverty level for your household size (or 100% if you are an active duty military member and sponsoring your spouse or child).

If you do not meet the required income amount, you may ask a joint sponsor to sign the affidavit.

Also Known As: Form I-864
