Each fiscal year, the Diversity Visa Program makes 50,000 immigrant visas available to people from countries that have low rates of immigration to the United States. Applicants who meet the eligibility requirements are entered into a random drawing. The "winners" are notified that that have been selected and should prepare for an immigration interview which may provide them with permanent residence in the U.S.
Many people wrongly assume that individuals who "win" a diversity visa automatically receive a green card. In fact, these immigrants must provide required documentation, forms and fees, and attend an immigration interview to determine if they are eligible for a green card.
