State lawmakers have to learn to be careful what they wish for when they venture into the messy world of immigration reforming.
Alabama one-upped Arizona this year and approved the nation's most restrictive immigration law. Due to take effect Sept. 1, the law authorizes police to verify the legal status of people arrested and requires schools to check out school kids. It is now a crime in Alabama to knowingly give an illegal immigrant a ride in your car.
The law goes so far as to encourage citizens to sue police, prosecutors and local officials if they do not enforce its provisions.
Politicians who voted for the bill said it would be good for business. But farmers, construction companies and immigrant groups warned it would drive workers out of the state in droves and devastate business.
Who's right? Alabamians soon will find out at the supermarket. The cost of groceries is going to soar, says John McMillan, the state's agriculture commissioner. It seems farmers can't find workers to harvest their crops. As in Arizona and more recently Georgia, restrictive laws have forced migrants to leave Alabama for more forgiving fields.
The laws' supporters said unemployed U.S. citizens would be only too happy to step in and do the work the migrants left behind. That didn't happen in Arizona, or Georgia, and it isn't happening in Alabama.
Commissioner McMillan is hoping the federal courts will block the law's implementation. He says it's clear now it was a mistake: "No question, the legislature overreached."

Wow! It is teetotally amazing how out of touch with history and reality some people can get. Democrats spent the first 50 years after the Depression fighting to protect American workers from the insatiable greed of employers and now they are fighting to force workers to settle for minimum wage or less with absolutely no benefits. We are not going to let you help the employers circumvent US labor law and it’s protections for legal resident workers.

That is exactly what it feels like. That is exactly what seems to be happening.
The illegal aliens have entered and stolen billions if not much more from the people of the United States. One and all who pay taxes, and since we all pay those taxes when we buy the goods, or when we send the money to Uncle Sam… all of us. Billions.. if not more.

Understand the illegal supporters.. who are the big agricultural corps, have started this ugly idea that the jobs are to hard for the American People, and when the illegal aliens are gone, the crops will rot. The American People.. the people of this country did that labor and earned a pretty good living from it too. The illegal aliens offered to do it for less, and they threw the Americans out of work. I would guess over a million people were thrown out of work by this process and all that that does is show you what a lot of money can do in the hands of the propaganda machine of the Agricultural Community.

First off let me start off by saying no one is an “illegal alien” its “undocumented immigrant”, what does an alien look like?.
No body has stolen “billions of dollars” as you claim, the government is great about issuing ITIN Numbers for them to pay taxes. UNDOCUMENTED PEOPLE PAY TAXES that’s the only number the government is so worried about giving. Is there any benefits even though taxes are paid? NO! You cant get anything without showing a social security number. Also unemployed people in Georgia dont even want to do the agricultural work, and have even said themselves that its hard work. Its not an ugly idea that the crops will rot, its a fact.
i think that the new immagracion law is bad because only how many kids are going to be seprated from there family.

i not sure if this law will make a huge difference to alabama. work will b available but people must step in. based on other states, tho, this may not b pretty. however, one cannot lose hope. maybe some jobless LEGAL immigrants, eager to prove themselves, will step in instead. in my opinion, it is a fair race. whoever gets there first gets it. only time will tell. ps i am a LEGAL immigrant and i am 12 years old.

IN Ezekiel 22:6-8 you will see that Israel was once punished for treating the aliens in there country in a similar fashion. Why should we expect any different. We are a country made up of Aliens. I can not believe what is happening in this country.
I think it is time for Alabama to put the word out to neighboring states that they need American workers… and with the economy as it is, many Americans will be glad to relocate to Alabama to work.
The state did nothing to harm the illegal immigrants, they just asked them to leave. The people were detained in order to determine if they were here as a citizen or an illegal person.
We are a nation of “legal” immigrants… we didn’t sneak in the back door, over the river, under the fence or hiding in a truck. We came through the front door and did what was required to enjoy the benefits of this country.
People entering illegally are stealing from the hard work of U.S. citizens and their children by using up their resources– benefitting from their healthcare system, police protection, welfare system, judicial system, section 8 housing–while Americans are doing without and losing their homes, their jobs, their savings trying to stay afloat.
Let these people return to their own nations and get their own houses in order, and not belittle us for wanting to do the same in our own country.
In addition, if the parents are illegal immigrants and are asked to leave OUR country, then they need to take their children with them. The children may have been born here, but should not be used as “anchors” to try to retain the right to stay in the United States. Their parents caused this dilemma–not the people of the United States of America. We are not responsible for their children.
Many of these illegal immigrants DO NOT want to permanently reside here in the U.S. They just want to earn money to send home so they can live like kings in their home nation. Many of these individuals truly despise the U.S. and its policies, but have come to “make a buck” and will be out of here asap. They don’t appreciate our laws, our rights, our losses attributed to their coming here–higher taxes, greater demand on welfare system and healthcare systems, increased section 8 housing needs, increased education expenses, etc. We are just a means to an end for many and how dare we complain about their being here. Just burns my toast to think about it…
