Does Obama's 2010 Budget Spell Disaster for Immigration Reform?

Friday May 8, 2009
2010 Budget

If you're confused and frustrated by all this talk of comprehensive immigration reform, there's good reason for it.

In February, Obama said that we needed to get started on immigration reform "now." At the beginning of April, administration officials said the President would launch immigration reform talks in May. A couple of weeks later, America's two largest labor federations united to support a push for comprehensive immigration reform legislation. Things seemed to be moving forward.

Then came April, and there was no mention of a target date in the President's prepared 100-days-in-office speech. Immigration reform was completely left off of his list of important issues. If not for a reporter's question, immigration would not have come up. But things seemed to get back on track quickly. The next day, Senate hearings on immigration reform began. As early as yesterday, Senator Schumer was quoted in the NY Daily News saying, "I believe that this year, we can pass comprehensive, strong, fair immigration reform."

Then out of nowhere comes The Washington Times today, saying that Obama has reversed his stance on immigration. Wait a minute, what happened?

Have you seen the President's 2010 budget? On May 2, 2009, President Obama released his full budget providing all the details for the blueprint that Congress approved in the Budget Resolution. The immigration portion of the budget seems to be focused on border security and immigration enforcement rather than on making the process easier for legal immigrants.

This shouldn't really surprise anyone. Border security has always been a part of Obama's immigration agenda, right from the start of the campaign. While he spoke out against an enforcement-first strategy, he sees border security and enforcement as part of the issue.

Does this mean that Obama has changed his tune on immigration and we likely won't see a push for reform legislation this year? I think it's too early to jump to that conclusion. The border security and enforcement part of the 2010 budget doesn't go against what Obama's been saying all along, and administration officials told us that reform talks wouldn't start moving until May. This jury's out til at least the end of the month.

This is nothing to get excited about. In order to pass comprehensive immigration reform, border security has to be addressed. I have hope that CIR will be passed soon.

Just a heads up to anyone out there wanting to make it easier for immigration, protests involving the desecration of the Flag of the U.S.A. is probably not going to help you much (see the Montebello High School flag incident and, yes, I know it wasn’t students from that school).

It’s just one thing after another with this illegal immigration. When it going to end?

I can’t say the ILLEGAL ALIENS are completely to blame for the shape of our economy, but they are a BIG part of the problem. The ILLEGAL ALIENS send BILLIONS upon BILLIONS out of this Country every year, money we will NEVER see again. Does this help our economy?

How about the BILLIONS the American taxpayers fork out for the ILLEGAL ALIEN BABIES, the schooling of them, the medical care and the list goes on, and on, and on.

How about the MILLIONS upon MILLIONS paid to jail ILLEGAL ALIENS for the crimes, then the cost to deport them. Does this help our economy?

Then you have these activist groups, the Catholic Church and the ACLU that want AMNESTY for these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It would be absolute suicide for this Country if AMNESTY were granted to the 20 million or so ILLEGAL ALIENS. We have more and more people out of work everyday and they want to add another 20 million to this Country? I say, “NO”!

If AMNESTY were ever granted to these 20 million ILLEGAL ALIENS, you can bet big money that 3 years from now, there would be ANOTHER 3-5 million ILLEGAL ALIENS demonstrating on our soil for AMNESTY.

An end MUST come to this illegal immigration. The perfect tool we have so far is E-Verify. It MUST be used by ALL businesses and Government Social Services. EVERY employee must be checked! If they are illegal, they are to be dismissed!

I believe it is time for all 50 States to pass a State law, like Arizona, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Missouri, South Carolina and a few others. It is time for these ILLEGAL ALIENS to go back to their home Country and get out of this Country. The problems they are causing will not go away until the ILLEGAL ALIENS are out of this Country.

It’s time for ZERO TOLERENCE with these ILLEGAL ALIENS. It’s time for them to get back to their own country where the belong. Once we get rid of the ILLEGAL ALIENS, we get rid of all the problems that go with them. THAT IS A FACT!

Please note, something is going on. I think they are trying to confuse and/or brain wash us first. Other editorials are talking about how Americans are softening on CIR, and only about 20% of Americans, red necks, are strongly against CIR. In essence they are saying that if you feel strongly against CIR, you are probably a Republican conservative red neck. Well, I have news for them! I am a black female, left wing liberal, and I am STRONGLY against ANY form of illegal immigration, and have NEVER waivered from this position. I never thought that I would live to see the day when our leaders were proponents of foreigners who invade our country and drain our resources, as opposed to protecting Americans from invaders both foreign and domestic, in times of extremely high unemployment (anytime is not okay, however). Republicans are truly the people who live in shadow. They are so afraid of losing future votes that they don’t take a strong stand againt CIR. I just laugh at this, because if you remember, Ronald Reagan granted amesty to about 1M, thus the reason for todays problem with 20M. However, you never hear them talk about how great Reagan was and loyalty to Republican party. They have no loyalty to anyone except who can give in to their demands at the moment. Lawmakers don’t see this, but I hope that we will give them something to remember us by in any next election. Let’s make a sound so loud that they will tremble when they hear the words, “We the people!” Not La Raza, etc.

to get rid of illegal immigrants, let’s get some american asses to work instead of getting government money. be able to do low jobs first, then blame pro-amnesty politicians.
even leagal immigrants are pro-amnesty due to the slow process.

(11) Eddie Brown says:

The reason Nothing has been done regarding “immigration reform” is because the issue has been open to public scrutiny for to long. You see, Bush thought it was going to quietly pass through congress without much notice like it did in 86. However, that was before the internet and 24hr. news chanels kept Citizens on top of what politicians were doing. In other words, We the people have become educated and informed on the subject of illegal immigration whether we wished to be or not. And the feedback politicians are getting from millions of Citizens (from both parties) is making many of them think twice about how much political capital they are willing to spend fighting for something the far overwhelming majority of the voting public does not support.

May 10, 2009 at 1:46 am
(13) Eddie Brown says:

When I say “Citizen” I mean African, Asian, Latino, and European Americans. We are all one and one in the same… When I say “Illegal alien” I mean someone who illegally enters any foreign Nation regardless if they are from Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, Or Latin America.
The wish and desire to have a “better life” is the wish and desire of virtually every human being on planet Earth. Hence the development and need for immigration Law. Without it the result is chaos, and chaos benefits no one.

20 million illegal immigrant
pay a fine of $3,000 per head and
make them legal. AND save our
Housing Market. Do the Math…

20,000,000 (illegal) x $3,000 (FINE or FEE)= $60,000,000,000

And these people will pay each Avg. Tax $3,000 per year

Another 20,000,000 (illegal) x $3,000 (TAX) = $60,000,000,000

That’s 120 BILLION into US Economy

This can be a GOOD JUMP START for this FALLING ECONOMY!!!

(15) panola says:

The problem is that most of the 12 – 20 millions illegal aliens we have now are not exactly the cream of the crop. They’ve already demonstrated their total disregard for all laws, rules and regulations. Not only are they guilty of illegal entry but most of them are also guilty of identity fraud and have caused much damage to millions of innocent U.S citizens. These illegal aliens should not be permitted to go to the back of the legal immigration line. They should be banned from the county permanently. There are millions even hundreds of millions of decent, honest people in the world that would love to take their place.

(16) Eddie Brown says:

Jesus,
The money is not the issue nor the concern of American citizens or legal immigrants. It is the principal of illegally sneaking into a foreign Nation Regardless of the reason. It shows no respect for the host Nation, The Citizens of the host Nation, or the hundreds of millions of legal immigrants that have respected immigration law in the past, and those that will do so in the future. Thanks, But You can keep Your money. There are three hundred million people in the United States, And I can assure You that We will do just fine without Your help.

I already left a perfectly legitimate point of view, posted it, saw it here, but now it’s gone.
It contained No foul language, no threatening statements, no racial slurs.
But it appears that, as with many other “freedoms”, it has just disappeared.
Illegal immigration has already robbed most Americans of several civil rights, apparently the “right to free speech” was due to disappear sooner than expected.
Today’s America has made me ashamed to be an American today.
It WAS at #18, but I replaced that comment with one more “politically correct”

I was once as you would call an illegal immigrant and im not ashamed of it, my parents miggrated to this country when i was only three yrs old and their reason was for a better future, and to follow the American dream, the dream to be able to give me something good to live for. Most of us illegal immigrants just want a better life for our children and our childrens children. When i was 17 i decided to enlist in the Marine Corps to give back to this great country this country for which im proud of calling my own. I dont know what to say anymore some of this words that are above my own make me think of all the illegal immigrants that have enlisted to serve for our country. Why do you judge all of us for the mistakes of others you dont see me doing the same against you. Theres alot that i would like to say but im currently in Afghanistan and i have to go back to keep a blanket up a blanket that protects not only you but my family as well when you sleep. Semper Fi…

Im so disgusted with those who blame every problem in this country on illegal immigrants. The black liberal female lois who commented on this disgusts me as well. They were saying the same things about you and your people before you were given your rights and now you have the nerve to talk like them. did you forget how “your people” were denied every opportunity?? Stop being so close minded and start acting human..

Immigration reform is really needed. Not all illegal aliens are criminals..not all aliens came here by choice…not all aliens send their money out of your country..Wake up and stop being so close minded..you probably have a classmate sitting next to you who is illegal, you probably have a coworker that you actually like that is illegal..and you will never know it..Shame on you..Pass IMMIGRATION REFORM Now..Stop blaming your problems on them…maybe if you werent so lazy you would take that dishwashing job, maybe if you werent so greedy you would take minimum wage..maybe if you had a mom or grandma in need you would be sending them money too. The only this people who oppose this fear is that the illegal aliens will work so hard and have a better life, a better house, a better job…To all those who oppose CIR, all I can say is get a life.
