Getting Married on a Travel Visa

Tuesday September 16, 2008
Getting married on a travel visa is not always a shortcut

Have you heard about the tourists who come to the U.S. on travel visas, marry and adjust status to become permanent residents? It's not fiction. It happens all the time. What's even more interesting is it's legal.

Those of you who are waiting patiently (and more often than not, not so patiently) for your fiance or spouse visa to be approved so you can move to the U.S. to be with your loved one, probably have a few choice words for people who take this "shortcut." But before you start hurling insults, you should know that there are many immigration lawyers who advocate this process.

If an individual hasn't researched the proper methods of immigrating to the U.S. to be with a spouse or fiance, why wouldn't they take the word of an experienced attorney? Unfortunately, these same people will likely also be unaware of the pitfalls of taking this shortcut. A reader recently asked about this so I've put together a list of things to consider before getting married on a travel visa.
