John McCain on Immigration

Monday September 1, 2008
McCain and Palin on immigration

John McCain has been called a maverick, and nowhere is this more evident than his policies on immigration. McCain has said that we must work in a bipartisan fashion to achieve immigration reform; a view that isn't always shared by his own party. Conservatives have blasted McCain for his plans for legalization of undocumented aliens, calling it amnesty. McCain has also worked closely with Democratic Senator Ted Kennedy on immigration, and led a bipartisan group of senators to produce the Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act of 2007. Although the bill failed in Congress, McCain vowed to continue the fight, although he did change his top immigration issue to border security.

Where Sarah Palin, McCain's newly-announced Vice Presidential nominee falls into the immigration debate, I just don't know. While we can be reasonably certain that Palin's immigration policies match McCain's, there is simply no information available for us to understand her position on the issue. I'm sure this will change in the coming weeks as the American public gets to know her. In the meantime, let's concentrate on McCain's immigration policies and plans.
